What is Mooli?

Mooli is a form of white radish. In other countries, it is called a winter radish or daikon radish, and even just simply daikon. The term mooli originated in Korea and it is the Korean word for it, alongside its other terms such as mooli radish or radish mooli. Otherwise, with all its terminologies, they refer to the same root vegetable popular in East Asia.

There are various mooli recipes available online and it is also found in a famous Korean dish, kimchi. Aside from this, it can be consumed raw or cooked. Furthermore, it has the health benefits that a single mooli recipe contains. Among its health benefits are aiding in fighting cough and cold, digestion, and boost immunity. Outside Korea and East Asia, daikon radish can be purchased in the UK and through Red Rickshaw for less than £2 for each piece.

Among the contents of radish, it is a good source of vitamin C which is an antioxidant that helps prevent cell damage in the body. It also helps in collagen production which makes the skin healthy. Other contents of radish are potassium, vitamin B-6, riboflavin, copper, sodium, zinc, and calcium.

HEALTH BENEFITS:

  • Helps indigestion. Mooli radish, which is available in the UK at Red Rickshaw, is a dietary fibre that helps indigestion. Consuming mooli a day, raw or cooked, helps in one’s bowel movement. More so, it prevents any constipation.
  • Fights cough and cold. Cough comes with a cold and there is no known cure for it. It is usually prevalent during winter and winter radish helps with it. With the anti-congestive properties of white radish or mooli, it clears the respiratory tract of one’s body.
  • Regulates blood pressure. Mooli radish is rich in nutrients. It is rich in potassium which helps keep the blood pressure under control. It maintains the sodium-potassium balance in the body which in turn helps in reducing one’s blood pressure.
  • Moisturizes the skin. Aside from the vitamins that mooli is rich in, it also contains phosphorus and zinc. And these nutrients help in moisturizing the skin and getting rid of acne and rashes. More so, it contains high water content which keeps the body hydrated. Hence, it keeps the skin glowing from within.
  • Contains anti-cancer properties. A study from 2021 discovered that the root extract of radish contains various types of isothiocyanates which causes cell death in some, particular, cancer cell lines.
