Karela, also known as bitter gourd and bitter melon, is a fruit grown in the Indian subcontinent and parts of Asia. Kerala is high in fibre and many vitamins and minerals such as, vitamin C, calcium, beta-carotene, iron, potassium, zinc and phosphorus. This makes it extremely good for us: aiding weight loss, skin and hair health, the immune system, eye health, helping in maintaining blood sugar levels, lowering cholesterol levels, and even curing hangovers and detoxifying the liver. Karela can be prepared in a number of ways but is particularly beneficial when juiced and consumed regularly. To reduce the bitterness, add some honey, jaggery or sweet fruits.
Caution: Pregnant women are advised to avoid Karela as it can stimulate miscarriage.
