Sona masoori rice is a lightweight and aromatic medium-grain rice which is the result of a cross combination of the rice varieties Sona and Mahsuri.  Sona Masuri can be used in sweet and savory dishes alike but is particularly popular in biryani, sweet Pongal, fried rice, and idli. Since Sona Masuri contains less starch than Basmati rice, it is easier to digest and considered in Southern India to be the healthier choice. It is a medium-grain, aromatic rice that is lightweight and low in starch.
